[edit] Characteristics

Wikis are designed to easily undo changes. Historic versions of wiki pages are saved and can be viewed by anyone. A wiki page can be rolled back to an older version.

[edit] Controversy

Since anyone can edit a wiki, accuracy of information is questioned. Students should be warned to be careful about using any "wiki" site for serious, academic research. The information can be changed by anyone and "wiki" sites frequently have misinformation or biased information. Double check any information gathered from a "wiki" website.

[edit] The Famous Wiki

Most teachers and students are familiar with Wikipedia.<ref>Wikipedia</ref> According to the Wikipedia website:

  1. if:
{{#if:| Template:! colspan="3" style="padding-top: 10px" Template:! {{#if:|

—{{{4}}}{{#if:|, {{{5}}}}}

}}

}}

border: 1px solid #AAAAAA;

}}" class="cquote"

width="20" valign="top" style="color:#B2B7F2;font-size:{{#switch:20px 10px=20px 30px=60px 40px=80px 50px=100px 60px=120px Wikipedia...is a multilingual, web-based, free content encyclopedia project. The name Wikipedia is a portmanteau of the words wiki (a type of collaborative website) and encyclopedia. Wikipedia's articles provide links to guide the user to related pages with additional information.<ref>Wikipedia: About</ref> width="20" valign="bottom" style="color:#B2B7F2;font-size:{{#switch:20px 10px=20px 30px=60px 40px=80px 50px=100px 60px=120px

While you should generally be wary about using any "wiki" site for serious research, you may find that Wikipedia is a great place to collect information and keywords that will help you with your initial searches. In addition, Wikipedia has many lists, which can help you narrow down a topic during the early stages of research.
